Who is YOUR Tenzing Norgay?

Today’s Buzz ...

From last night’s program:

Kerry endorses Obama: Haven’t really changed my opinion since yesterday. Appreciated Joe Klein’s humor: “Maybe among windsurfers, it means something.” Ouch. That got an audible, off-camera laugh from David Gergen. Joe also made a very good point that organizational endorsements are the most beneficial – and that the larger ones not only secure additional votes, but put foot soldiers on the ground going door-to-door and manning phone banks on behalf of a candidate. But I think Candy Crowley had the best line of the night on the subject of endorsements: “Individual endorsements may matter only along the margins, but, in tight races, victory is in the margins.”

Obama vs. Clinton vs. Edwards: Tom Foreman contributed a piece to start the South Carolina analysis of where each candidate stands and what they have to do to win. The panel of Gergen, Brazile and Klein (sounds like a DC law firm!) continued and expanded the discussion – moving into Nevada and also the prospect of attracting another voting block – the large Latino community in that state.

Ron Paul under fire: I have to agree with David Gergen on this one. Dr. Paul hasn’t done nearly enough to allay the public’s concern over the discovery of newsletters with discriminatory slurs published under his name. Even though he claims he didn’t write the material, never read it and that there was an outside publisher, these kinds of derogatory remarks can be found repeated over the course of three years. That is simply too many times over the course of too long a period of time to be taken as lightly by the Paul campaign as it seems to be.

Missing Marine (now assumed dead): Very mysterious circumstances to begin with and this morning’s developments didn’t help. Maria Lauterbach’s body is currently being searched for in Onslow County, NC – and the interview I heard between Sherriff Ed Brown and Don Lemon created more questions than it answered. A summary of the story can be found here.

GOP Debate: John King provided a wrap-up of last night’s debate in Myrtle Beach, SC. In summary, the candidates know the high stakes involved and the value of winning in both South Carolina and Michigan, so their attacks (or ‘contrasts’, to be more diplomatic) focused on each other, rather than any potential Democratic opponent. Fred Thompson went after Mike Huckabee, and Mitt Romney and John McCain took some ‘jabs’ at one another. It’s getting rougher all the time out there ...

And I’m posting these mainly because they're kind of nice shots – but also because this is the reaction after Joe Klein ‘ribbed’ Anderson ever-so-gently about future ‘dependence’ on poll numbers:

Kenya violence: FINALLY – after two weeks – we get a dedicated on-the-ground report from Zain Verjee in Mombasa, Kenya. The violence that has erupted after recent election results has adversely affected Kenya’s tourist industry – not to mention the property destruction and displacement of residents that has occurred. And even though a campaign has begun to seek a political compromise in lieu of continuous violence, Kenyan leaders are reluctant to participate.

Sir Edmund Hillary: The New Zealand adventurer passed away yesterday at age 88. Hillary's life was marked by grand achievements, high adventure, discovery, excitement — and by his personal humility. Humble to the point that he only admitted being the first man atop Everest long after the 1986 death of his Sherpa climbing companion, Tenzing Norgay.

Just as a brief side note – one of the most thought-provoking questions I’ve ever been asked in a job interview was: “Who is your Tenzing Norgay – and why?” If you know anything or have read anything about the perils of extreme mountain climbing - your answer can speak volumes, let me tell you!

Beat 360° Winner: This was an adorable picture – I might have chosen one of the other caption entries, but this one was cute!

Today’s photo entry is below – send your caption in now – I think I like the staff’s suggestion best so far: “Hey, don't you ever say that about Chuck Norris's running mate!”

Tonight on Anderson Cooper 360°:

Hopefully the Eric Volz interview will air tonight – maybe it will depend on whether or not Anderson makes it to Atlanta in time or not – per today’s AC blog entry!

Update # 1: To the Anonymous poster who commented that Anderson did make it to Atlanta - my apologies for mistakenly hitting the 'delete' button - thank you for sending it in - I didn't watch the program yet and will have to watch my recording later today!

Thanks for visiting - updates posted as needed - have a terrific day!
