The scramble for meaning …

Today’s Buzz ...

From last night’s program:

You know, it’s interesting to watch so many of the pundits and wonks desperately trying to unravel themselves from the steadfast predictions and ‘coronations’ being made less than one week ago, post-Iowa caucus.

There was one great line of the night (unfortunately on The Daily Show, not 360°) which I’ll get to later, but as for 360°, we’ll start with:

Bill Richardson to withdraw: No official announcement yet from the Richardson camp, but speculation is rampant. Another highly experienced candidate bites the dust. (Update: announcement made - he's out!)

Bloomberg gathers “data”: John King had a report on the activity that Michael Bloomberg is currently engaged in – gathering voter-related “data”, as JK described it – for a Presidential run. Well, there’s one thing we can be sure of – if Michael Bloomberg joins this campaign as an independent candidate – himself – then he lacks honesty right upfront, as he has stated far too many times, in unequivocal terms, that he is not running – himself. However, my thought is that - assuming the report is correct – he’s doing this to support a run by someone else. Who? Possibly someone like Chuck Hagel? How about Colin Powell? We’ll have to wait and see, as no decision will be made until after Super Tuesday results are in. And if it looks as though Obama is the candidate of choice, there will probably be no further action on that front – for the moment. More intrigue, as if we needed it!

I normally don’t highlight stories from the News Bulletins, but this one is different – it’s a follow up to the Megan Meier story – the 13-year-old Missouri girl who committed suicide after online harassment from what turned out to be a neighborhood mother of one of Megan’s classmates. Federal charges are now being considered (thankfully) – this is the summary from Erica Hill:

"In L.A., federal prosecutors now considering whether to charge a woman with defrauding MySpace by allegedly creating a false account and using it to harass a Missouri teen who ultimately killed herself. A federal grand jury has issued subpoenas as it looks into the suicide of Megan Meier. The 13-year-old thought she was communicating with a boy on that MySpace site, but police say it was actually the mother of one of Megan's former friends, who was sending her cruel messages."

Finally - a possibility for some justice in this very sad story!

There was a segment with Jeff Toobin going through the ‘map’ of the upcoming primaries and caucuses – a little too confusing to remember, which is why I posted the link to a comprehensive calendar yesterday – I’ll add it to the sidebar later today – but here is the schedule for the upcoming CNN debates:

Dyson vs. Holmes: It was almost difficult to know what the ‘discussion’ was about; Professor Michael Eric Dyson and Republican Strategist Amy Holmes have ‘sparred’ before, so I’ll let the intro from AC set the stage: "COOPER: As you just heard, Bill Schneider saw no apparent racial effect in Clinton's win over Obama yesterday or in the answers to polls, but some did, insisting that the pollsters were lied to by people who said race wouldn't be a factor in how they voted when it really was. The theory is called the Bradley effect. It's happened to candidates in the past. Michael Eric Dyson, Georgetown University professor joins us now. He's the author of "Debating Race" and an Obama supporter who believes it did play a part yesterday. CNN political analyst Amy Holmes says it did not. Both join me now." And they were off and sparring!

Channeling political elocutionists: I’d been giving some thought to this subject, so I was pleased to see Tom Foreman’s piece on which ‘speech mentor’ the leading candidates have been attempting to model themselves after. The list goes like this:
  • Obama / MLK and JFK
  • McCain / Reagan
  • H. Clinton / B. Clinton
  • Romney / unspecified CEO
  • Huckabee / unspecified minister

I’d have to say that I pretty much agree with Tom’s assessment – whether they’re successfully channeling is a whole other topic:

Other notes from last night:

I have to admit that the best line of the night came in the form of a question on The Daily Show – from Jon Stewart to guest John Zogby (President of polling firm Zogby International) – about the media’s obsession with ‘predicting outcomes’:

“My point is ‘Why can’t we wait?’ What do you think it is in terms of the media that makes it so that they have to know – before they know? So that they can say they know - and then come back and go ‘I guess we didn’t know’?”

Zogby’s response – after several seconds of silly (but somewhat uncomfortable) silence – was that he was still his family’s ATM and still had to make money – but admitted that he (and his company) really didn’t know why New Hampshire turned out the way it did. He was kidding about the ATM part (sort of), but not about the ‘not knowing’ part. You can watch the full segment here – it’s rather enlightening:

Jon also took a few ‘shots’ at the high-tech ‘wizardry’ of the campaign coverage – including the possibly failed “pizza” gizmo - see video clip below screen cap:

BTW – thank God that Jon & Stephen are back !!!!! I think that’s all I need to say on that subject!!!

Other notes from today:

John Kerry has ‘endorsed’ Barack Obama. A snub to his former running mate, John Edwards, to be sure. I guess the endorsement is valuable because of the information and advisement that can be shared, but otherwise – is that something really something to promote? Just a question ...

Also – Eric Volz will be interviewed on 360° this evening, with a follow-up piece shown tomorrow night. As you’ll recall, Eric is the American that was wrongly convicted of murdering his former girlfriend and jailed in Nicaragua, until his sentence was recently overturned and he was finally released.

Tonight on Anderson Cooper 360°:

Update # 1 (thank you, Judy!):

Anderson will have a new segment airing on this Sunday's 60 Minutes - here's a link to a video clip and the segment summary below:

WAR AGAINST WOMEN - The civil war in Congo is an ethnic conflict, but gender has become a crucial factor, too, as women are bearing the brunt of one of the horrible weapons used in the war: rape. CNN's Anderson Cooper reports. Michael Gavshon and Drew Magratten are the producers.

Thanks very much for visiting - updates posted as needed - have a terrific Thursday!

the invasion of New Hampshire ...

Today’s Buzz ...

From last night’s program – live from Manchester, NH:

I hope no one was surprised to see all of the Ron Paul supporters and signs surrounding the scene last night? Gosh, they are dedicated, if nothing else ...

It was also no surprise that most of the program focused on a round-up of last minute appearances and speeches and persuasion of leading contenders to voters in today’s NH primary.

Anderson had the opportunity to speak with both Mitt Romney and John Edwards yesterday:

John King had an interesting report on how the GOP is already starting to recalibrate its ‘attack machine” (and yes, the Democrats have the same) towards Barack Obama and away from Hillary Clinton.

There was discussion with Candy Crowley about Hillary’s ‘emotional moment’ during the day; I’ve probably done my share of Hillary-bashing and I’m going to purposefully leave this one alone, not because I feel sorry for her, but because I’d rather reserve my comments for more substantial issues and moments. Although I think the reaction to it all is interesting – even the fact that it’s ‘mentioned’ is interesting in and of itself.

I was particularly interested in Randi Kaye’s piece about the “female” vote, and that when it comes right down to it, there isn’t as much of an unspoken ‘sisterhood of support’ for a female candidate as one might expect. And one of the reasons among younger women she cited was especially interesting – about the fact that many of them simply haven’t experienced the same level of ‘covert discrimination’ that many older women have, and therefore don’t automatically subscribe to the “it’s time for a woman to be President” argument.

Joe Johns had a good report about McCain’s resurgence – and the fact that McCain hasn’t necessarily changed positions from those that seemed so unpopular just a few months ago, but combination of circumstances around him having changed, as well as the usual ‘volatility’ of a political race, have allowed him to become viable once again.

Tom Foreman was on duty in Dixville Notch last night – the post-midnight result for the 17 available votes was:

Democrats: Obama: 7 votes, Edwards: 2 votes, Richardson: 1 vote
Republicans: McCain: 4 votes, Romney: 2 votes, Giuliani: 1 vote

It was great to see Gary Tuchman reporting the 360° Bulletin last night!!

Anderson posted a video blog yesterday – as he was traveling in NH with (clockwise from top right) producer Claire Brinberg, photojournalist Neil Hallsworth (who I’m sure has received many marriage proposals since yesterday) and senior producer Charlie Moore:

Well, tonight’s the night (that’s a Rod Stewart song, right?) – or at least one of many – and anticipation is high – the reports I’m hearing from CNN TV is that there is already a record turnout – this is getting good and it’s great to hear about people continuing to get involved - regardless of where you stand on candidates or issues!!

Just a quick 'visual' from last night's return of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report - both Jon and Stephen did very well under the circumstances - but I'm not sure how long they can really 'last' without writers??

Thanks for visiting - updates posted as needed - have a terrific day!

Last night’s (happy) EXCLUSIVE …

Today’s Buzz ...

From last night’s program:

California family found: And Anderson Cooper was the FIRST to interview them – very shortly after their arrival home!! And this one was truly an exclusive ... as the Dominguez children had just arrived home only a few minutes before the interview began! I was SO glad that Anderson was the first one to talk with them, because there's no one - and I mean NO ONE - who could have done a better job with interviewing them so soon after their ordeal! Thankfully this story has a happy ending, because a lot of people were starting to get worried, and rightly so. I'm sure they'll make the "interview rounds" over the next couple of days, but as I said, it's terrific that AC was first!

Christopher, Alexis and Joshua Dominguez, and their father (Frederick) had been lost in a rugged, mountainous region of Butte County after driving to an area where they planned to find a Christmas tree on Sunday. Obviously, under the circumstances, they weren’t prepared for being separated from their vehicle and spending three days (and nights) outdoors in the cold and the snow.

As for the situation itself, an astute AC360° group member noted this morning that too many Californians (especially in the Bay area and Sacramento area) don’t always appreciate, or prepare for, the potential dangers of travel through mountainous regions. It’s not all sand and surf and sun here! But with the availability of GPS technology, these kinds of situations will hopefully become much less frequent.

But thankfully – this story has a very happy ending – the Dominguez children and their father certainly had some kind of angel looking out for them! Major kudos also to the CHP Rescue Patrol (Steve Ward and Dave White on board the rescue helicopter) and Butte County Search and Rescue incident commander Matt Pearce – excellent job!!

Daily Stat fix: New candidate polls from New Hampshire are out, and right now, they look quite different from Iowa polls. The conventional reasoning is that NH voters are focusing on ‘issues’ rather than ‘charisma’. A side-swipe at Iowans, to be sure. So we’ll see if there’s any significant ‘shift’ in NH numbers after January 3rd!!

Who turned Jeff Toobin into “Scrooge”??: Jeff, John King and Jennifer Donohue (NH Institute is Politics) analyzed the candidates’ “holiday ads” that are airing in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. A unique situation forced upon the campaigns because of the new caucus and primary schedules. But guess what? The cynic in me does understand Jeff’s point about ‘phoniness’. Although I also understand Jennifer’s point that the ads do “say” something about the candidates (i.e. – Mitt and Barack with families, Hillary and Rudy sans families). BTW – Rudy can keep the fruitcake!! And I am appalled that what John King said to end the segment might really still be true: “But likeability matters in politics as much as issues, and these ads will either work or backfire. But it does matter.” Bah Humbug!!

“Rita” Relief: Where do government agencies find people like Michael Gerber? I’m talking about people who can sit for a nationally televised interview and justify the stunning corruption that is so evident within the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. And do it so very calmly and so very convincingly – or least convincingly to themselves. There is nothing that anyone can say at this point – two years later – to reconcile the injustice that Helena Saunders – and all the other Helenas in the state – have had to endure because of the willful negligence of this agency. Randi Kaye, who reported this story, also has a good write-up available at CNN.com.

The “Shot”: Let’s just say that for the sake of “Candy Strand’s” family – she doesn’t end up being electrocuted.

Erica is MIA: Not that I don’t enjoy Randi Kaye doing the “bulletins” – I do – but I guess I was hoping that Erica would have a chance to “spring” the Elf Anchor Video on Mr. Cooper this week!!

Other Notes:

why Anderson won't dance (on camera) ...

There’s been an on-and-off discussion at the AC360° Yahoo group about the opportunities that Anderson has passed up to regale us with his “footwork”. I suspect it may be because he doesn't want to put himself in a similar situation as what David Gregory is about to endure (i.e. - nasty comments) after 'groovin' to Mary J. Blige - although I'm sure that Mr. Cooper isn't quite so, well, lame?? (Apologies to David Gregory) - here’s the link to the video.

If, by any chance, you might be interested in seeing a video replay of the now infamous "Gunmetal Grey" mention by Stage Manager Kevin this past Tuesday evening, you can find it here!!

Anderson's favorite New Year's Eve memory has been posted as an i-Report!!

There are a NUMBER of excellent entries over the past few days on the AC360° blog – check out some (or all) of them:

Update # 1: The Daily Show and The Colbert Report to return on Jan. 7th ....

I don't how they're going to do this, but Jon & Stephen will be back on the air as of January 7th - without their striking writers, if necessary!!

In a joint statement, Stewart and Colbert said: "We would like to return to work with our writers. If we cannot, we would like to express our ambivalence, but without our writers we are unable to express something as nuanced as ambivalence."

Thanks so much for visiting - updates posted as needed - have a terrific day!!
