A black cloud over baseball …

Today’s Buzz ...

From last night’s program:

Steroids and baseball: Well, the release of the Mitchell Report confirmed what most baseball fans (myself included) have known for many years. Performance-enhancing substances (including HGH) have been a part of baseball for a number of years. I first heard ‘rumblings’ in the 1998 season when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were on track to break the single season home run record. And it never subsided thereafter. Both Jeff Toobin and Gary Tuchman weighed in on the fallout that this disclosure will have on the future of the game. What a sad day for Little Leaguers who now know – with certainty – that cheating is not only OK, but it pays well, too.

Iowa Democratic Debate: Another “love fest”, according to David Gergen, John King and Joe Klein. Yesterday’s debate gave little, if any, policy differentiations among the candidates – it’s come down to personal style and appeal. And while there is something to be said for that, I’ll take a moment to use a well-worn cliché – “caveat emptor” – the last time “style” won out over “substance”, George W. Bush was being sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States.

Samuel Snow was robbed: I didn’t know the Army was being run by animatronic neanderthals dressed up as human beings? Because there is no other rational explanation as to why Mr. Snow would have received a check for $725.00 to compensate him for being wrongly accused, tried, convicted and dishonorably discharged for a crime he had nothing to do with. And one that happened over 60 years ago. Mr. Snow has never received any military benefits that he would have otherwise been entitled to – because he was part of a group of black soldiers scapegoated in a ‘rush to judgment’ over the murder of an Italian POW in World War II. The $725.00 represents the amount of Army pay he lost during 15 months in prison. No more, no less. Unbelievable.

Anderson & Gary share some laughs – Part 4:

Anderson and Gary check out some glow-in-the-dark cats, except they look like bats when the lights go out ...

And last but not least, a shared discussion about the “cougar-ish” similarities between Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees John Mellencamp and Madonna … what could that possibly MEAN????

And we now know who the ‘special guest’ will be on New Year’s Eve – sharing the spotlight with Mr. Cooper in Times Square – none other than – drum roll, please – KATHY GRIFFIN!!! And to submit your i-Party video, click on the link found here!

And this morning on Live with Regis & Kelly, guest co-host Anderson Cooper shared one of the funniest stories yet – about some ‘drunk girls’ that he happened upon while trying to use an ATM in a deli to get cab fare. You can hear the rest of the story by watching the video on the “Live” homepage.

Thanks so much for visiting – have a terrific evening!

Newsblooz: Gary has written some great blog posts about this subject, although I think today’s mysteriously disappeared from the 360 blog. I think everyone suspected that these so-called "super athletes" were taking performance-enhancing drugs, but no one wanted to admit it. I am afraid that the "Great American Pastime" has been reduced to winning at any cost.

Although cheaters have always existed in the world of sports,I think there used to be more pride involved. However, as the salaries got larger the incentive to cheat became more intense. Now it is completely out of control. It is a business and nothing is more important than the bottom line.

I would be interested to know what the Little Leaguers are being told about this and what they think about it.

When Bush was giving his take on this subject I wondered how many people remembered that he once owned a share of the Texas Rangers. Someone should ask him if he monitored his players for these drugs.

Now that the fans are used to seeing these Neanderthal-like “athletes” break record after record they will never go back to accepting the truly talented athletes who do not cheat by taking steroids and growth hormones.

I agree with you, Samuel Snow was robbed; $725,000 is nothing compared to what he lost. In addition to everything else, how do you compensate someone for their loss of dignity? I wonder how many more Samuel Snows maybe still out there.

@Stardust: I've been reading that the Mitchell Report is being greeted with a "shrug" by baseball fans - kind of like an after-thought. Which it is, in a way, and perhaps even a sadder commentary on what the expectations of our society are at this point in time.

Oh please - George Bush just needed to "seem" like he had some kind of job - he never really contributed anything of value (over and above the cash) to the Rangers. Bush "41" bought into the club simply to keep "W" out of trouble.

And I don't mean to be picky - but the amount that Samuel Snow got was $725.00 - you must have missed the decimal point - which of course, makes the story all the more outrageous!! ;-)

Newsblooz: Sorry, my mistake; I meant $725.00.

It's OK - I knew that you knew it was only $725.00 - I just didn't want anyone else to think that you missed a decimal point! Even if Samuel had received $725,000 - I'm still not sure that would be enough, given that he's missed out on GI Bill benefits, home loan benefits, medical benefits, etc., etc.,- for all these years!!! I guess we can hope that there aren't too many other "Samuel Snows" out there!

I missed what sounded like a hilarious segment it seems. So especially thankful you posted the screen caps. Looked like great fun!

I did catch AC on R&K that morning. ROTFL during the "drunk girls" story.
