(Oh - this should be VERY interesting - Sy Hersh has been trying to alert the American public about this for a LONG time, and he's been almost summarily dismissed - until now. I am SO glad that he's being interviewed on 360, and I hope that the segment actually gets on the air tonight.)
- From last night’s program:
Phoenix airport video ...
First – condolences are sent to Carol Ann Gotbaum’s family. Regardless of specific circumstances, a family is tragically and unexpectedly without a wife and mother.
Even though this may not be a popular opinion, I’m tending to disagree with the e-mail feedback that was sent in last night. I know the video was grainy, but to me, it appeared that both the TSA officers and Phoenix police officers attempted to verbally calm her down before any physical contact was made. In addition, it certainly appeared as though she pulled herself to the ground, as opposed to being “tackled”. And although clearly distraught as she was being taken to the holding room, it didn’t appear that she was having difficulty in breathing – particularly if she was yelling from the holding room. But as I wrote yesterday, there will still be more details to come as the autopsy results eventually get released, and this is a tragedy nonetheless. Photo courtesy of CNN:
Philly guns ...
There have been 308 murders in Philadelphia this year. By comparison, there have been 311 murders in New York City. Isn’t that enough of a red flag by itself to alert PA state legislature that their efforts to limit municipal jurisdictions from passing additional gun control laws may need to be revisited? It’s not a positive sign for the Philly Chamber of Commerce when the city’s promotional slogan is: “It’s as easy to get uzis here as it is to get pizza.” And I enjoyed the brilliant rationalization of State Senator Vincent Fumo: “It’s a great way to get away from enforcement. It’s a great way of avoiding the issue of hiring more police”. What an ignorant statement. From an elected official. The voters in the state of Pennsylvania have their opportunity to change that. Oh – and by the way – note to Senator Fumo – it might benefit you to be a little more aware of your constituents' safety concerns, especially with other actions that are pending.
Senator Craig resigns (not) ...
I’m still surprised that anyone else is surprised that Craig is staying in the Senate. When I heard the vocal inflection that he used with the word “intend” during the now infamous Saturday press conference, I knew right then and there that he really had no “intent” to follow through with it. Let him stay – minus his committee chairmanship roles. It’s great re-election fodder!
Immigration Crackdown ...
We had a report from Soledad O’Brien about what appears to be an increasingly effective, although sporadic, crackdown against illegal immigrants. Much of it stems from certain states now stopping the renewal of drivers’ licenses and other forms of state ID. I wonder if anyone connected with the New York State legislature was listening last night? I doubt if much would change Governor Spitzer’s mind, since he is the catalyst behind a pending policy that will allow illegal immigrants in New York State to obtain driver’s licenses.
“Warming Island” ...
So what’s wrong with a new land mass that appears because of a melting ice shelf? It’s more room for the walrus population, right? (BTW ... I’m kidding ...) Discovered by explorer Dennis Schmitt, the world’s “newest” island is now a permanent reminder of a “warming” planet.
This is just wrong ...
A father in China tied his 10-year-old daughter’s hands and feet before she began a three hour swim to “train” for eventually swimming across the English Channel. Talk about child endangerment ...
“The Shot” ...
A car theft suspect leaps from a third floor balcony; he survives and is tackled moments later by the photographer who took the picture ...
Quick "OT" note ...
Stephen Colbert will be appearing on Larry King Live next Thursday, October 11th. I anticipate that there will be what I would call "Kathy Griffin level" laughter from Mr. King. You can e-mail a question for Stephen here or send a video e-mail here, and you can get a full list of book signing appearances here.
Thanks for visiting ... updates posted as needed ... have a terrific day (and weekend)!
