Not part of Tuesday’s program …

Today’s Buzz ...

Tonight on Anderson Cooper 360°:

  • From last night’s program:

Note: While last night’s program was good, I’m not sure it’s in the “compelling” category, so I think I’m going to just briefly review a few of the segments, partly because there were so many “extra-curricular” activities yesterday that I want to make sure get mentioned ...

Carol Ann Gotbaum (Phoenix airport death): I’m not sure I’m going to say anything further until the toxicology reports are released, but I do have much sympathy for Noah Gotbaum, his children and the entire family. Yet, I feel I have to say once again that police and TSA officers are stationed at an airport to protect the travelers and when confronted with anyone displaying similar behavior, it’s their primary job to ensure the safety of everyone.

Alina Cho reported a number of pieces of information that helped address some unanswered questions, such as why Ms. Gotbaum was screaming about “not being a terrorist”. The audio clip from the funeral yesterday was very sad, and understandably so, but again – it didn’t appear that an arm around a shoulder would have been very effective at the point that Carol Ann was taken into custody. Maybe she shouldn’t have been making that difficult trip on her own? More developments to follow, I’m sure ...

Fred Thompson’s debate debut: It’s a good thing no one has to audition to be a Presidential candidate. Even Ed Rollins didn’t seem overly impressed with Fred Thompson – saying that “he didn’t gain, and he didn’t lose”. But I’m reading (and hearing) a lot of opinion that “Mr. T” isn’t quite the savior that conservatives were hoping for. Good news for Rudy & Mitt – who took shots again at each other last night … keep it up, boys ... that’s the way to unite what is quickly becoming a fractured Republican Party ...

Body Parts Industry: This is a little too morbid for me to comment much about, other than to say that if Michael Mastromarino is guilty of what he’s accused of, he should see significant jail time. There are probably many more Wendy Koguts who have no idea that their deceased loved ones were violated in such a horrible way, and there are probably many more Robbie Zappas who should be regularly tested for hepatitis, STDs and AIDS – but have no idea that they’re in any danger!

DC Sniper SIU preview: Even though it was a sad topic, I enjoyed the interview that Anderson did with Cheryll Witz, whose father was killed by Lee Boyd Malvo, in Tucson, before the DC killing spree even began. Her father had been targeted and stalked for 3 days before being killed. I can’t blame her for saying that she accepts Malvo’s apology, but can’t forgive him.

Planet in Peril preview: Madagascar is such a fascinating place – wasn’t the gecko hiding on the tree limb kind of eerie? But that’s its defense – if it can’t be seen, it can’t be attacked, unless a predator climbs on top of it. One more of the many, many reasons to watch the PIP documentary on 10/23 and 10/24. As Olivia Zaleski wrote in today’s HuffPo, “It’s a real crisis happening in real time.”

So on to the other aforementioned “extra-curriculars” from yesterday:

A busy day for Anderson yesterday ...

First - the appearance on The View (11:00 AM ET) (more on that below) - and then on to lunch at Michael's with Elizabeth Edwards, Diane Sawyer, Leslie Stahl and Nora Ephron, among others. And then back to work last night ... :-)

Viewing “The View” ...

Well, other than wishing it had been a little longer, I thought that Anderson’s appearance was pretty good. He seemed to stay "on message" with talking about the Planet in Peril documentary. Even though he's already been "taken to task" on at least one conservative blog for saying that CNN isn't promoting any specific agenda with this documentary.

And regarding the question from Joy Behar about candidates wearing (or not wearing) lapel pins (??) - I thought that Anderson's answer was terrific. This really shouldn’t be an issue that’s discussed at any length – but here we go again. I've always been kind of neutral about her, but she sometimes seems to ask off-topic questions at unusual moments, and this was one of those times.

I also laughed at the "mock" amazement during the very last shot of Anderson's segment - about the fact that there really ARE shoes that can be purchased for less than $50.00 - a touch of sarcasm is sometimes good to leave on ... ;-)

(more) CMJ Music & Marathon info ...

The showing of the PIP documentary at this event has already been announced, but this gives a little more definitive info about where and when that will happen during the marathon:

For the second time, R.E.M. will use popular CNN anchor Anderson Cooper's show to introduce new music. "Until The Day Is Done," a song that the band has been touring of late, will premiere in tonight's episode of Anderson Cooper 360, synced up with clips from the upcoming CNN special, Planet In Peril, which airs October 23 and 24 and will also be placed on the big screen during this year's CMJ Music Marathon , October 19, at the IFC Center in New York. The song can also be heard in tomorrow's AC360° podcast and at CNN.com. R.E.M. gave fans first look at the video for their song "Bad Day" on Cooper's show in 2003. A Q&A with Cooper will follow the CMJ screening, so here's your chance to ask him which R.E.M album is his favorite.

Thanks for visiting - updates posted as needed - have a terrific day!
